Why would you want to bring your own bag? For years, decades, no... centuries or... since the beginning of time or if I remember it right, we never brought our own bags to the grocery store or the mall. Why would we, when there are limitless plastic bags or paper bags there?
Times have changed indeed as in the 60s when Bob Dylan would sing “Times they are a-changing”. Now there is what we call environmental activism and activists for a number of decades now have rant and shouted about the mindless habits of humans regarding our environment or in general about our having no sense at all with regards taking care of this earth. Now what's this got to do with with bringing you own bag? Believe me, bags are now directly involved in taking care of dear earth. There is a revolution today called Bring Your Own Bag and what's this all about?
Before we will tell you about this revolution, let us listen to what organizations and private people are saying about BYOB...
The City of Edmonds, Washington says: When asked “paper or plastic?” at the checkout counter, the best answer is, “Neither. I brought my own!” Reusable bags are a much better option. Most are recyclable, lightweight, durable, and washable, and can carry three to four times the amount of weight than a single-use bag. Making a conscious effort to use reusable bags instead of single-use bags is ecologically and economically beneficial. Using reusable bags conserves energy and natural resources, reduces waste in landfills, diminishes litter, and promotes a cleaner environment.
I believe all these. Reusable bags are recyclable... yes you can use them again and again... and again. You can use them for groceries, for shopping at the mall, for fruits and vegetables in fact you can use them for your baby if your the adventurous type.( wink! ) They are lightweight. Yes they are. In fact you can bring with you three, four or even five to where ever you go. This way you can buy anything on your way home without using single-use bags. Then you will never have to use plastic or paper bag anymore. Are they durable? Yes they are. Have I not told you awhile ago that you can even put your baby inside the bag in case he is throwing his tantrums again. Just joking. Kidding aside you can use your own bag for some not so light stuff. Like small items from handyman or some books from your favorite bookstore, or some thingamajigs from a home decor store. And are they washable? Definitely they are. One time I went to the market to buy some eggs and a couple of them were broken along the way. Can you imagine the mess I made? The bag was not only slimy and sticky. Gosh! It also stinked! So, washed I did and now I'm still using the bag. You can't do that with a plastic shopping bag or a paper bag.
The important thing to remember is to be a role model to others especially to young people for using reusable bags. It may seem like you are just saving a few cash here and there, but for every person that is positively influenced by you, it all adds up to a future with a better environment.
So what is Bring Your Own Bag all about? It's a campaign to use reusable bag to save planet earth. Using reusable bags will bring down the number of plastic bags being used in stores. This will translate to fewer plastic and other non-biodegradable waste in landfills. In the long run, this will make a great impact to helping humanity to preserve the only habitat we have-- dear planet earth.
